Casa Amarelo – The Brazilian Art of Living

Casa Amarelo, or the Yellow House, is a charming boutique hotel housed in an old mansion from 1904 that provides a slice of French ‘savoir faire’ in the most bohemian neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Santa Teresa.

With design created by renowned Parisian studio Robert le Héros, the bohemian chic feel is seen throughout. The large, spacious rooms draw from the graphic patterns and geometry of the original tiles and parquet floors, each having its own ‘personality’. The facade and verandas are the perfect vantage points to admire the marvelous views of city – one can see the modernist architecture of Rio de Janeiro’s downtown, the old colonial convents and Portuguese churches, the mountain chain that surrounds the bay and feel the late afternoon sea breeze ushering the tropical nights’ cool air that flow through the large vintage windows of the mansion giving such a romantic atmosphere. One can fall in love very quickly with this city!

Laurent Gelis, the creative director, bought the house in 2006, and injected his passion for Rio into every single detail in the mansion – loved at first sight by the French entrepreneur. This passion translates into a place that inspires the lucky guests to adventure, partying and exploring the fantastic local life of the Santa Teresa neighborhood. Expect plenty of vintage furniture, beautiful light design, a palette of muted colors and beautiful fabrics made in France. The former tiled winter garden showcases amazing Portuguese vintage tiled walls with colonial ship motifs and mosaic floors.

My favorite room was the suite ‘Autumn Flower’ with its original 1900’s bathroom, vintage porcelain details and high ceiling. Each of the suites though is completely different and unique: the tower suite has its own entrance by turn of the century original lift and with remarkable views; the chalet is a quaint independent space among the lush tropical gardens of the house with its own private patio.

This French touch from owner Laurent Gelis combined with Brazil’s lightness of living makes Casa Amarelo’s 7 suites super comfortable, neat, and with just the right dose of contemporary style. Modern luxury abounds and  guests will appreciate the elegantly designed atmosphere and the excellence of a real art de vivre experience. A beautiful Brazilian mansion to call your own.

It is a magical place loaded with history in which modern layout and ancient construction form a perfect and charming match.
